Preacher's Corner

Pastor Brian Loveness

SAUL. Israel's first superstar. Israel's first King. He was everything you could want in a leader. Tall. Strong. Smart. Handsome. When David was just a nobody tending his father's sheep – Saul was leading men to victory on the battlefield. He was humble, kind, and filled with the power of God...IN THE BEGINNING. But along the way something happened to Saul. He changed. He became more concerned about his reputation than he was about his character. More concerned with pleasing men than he was with pleasing God. "King Saul" became a carefully crafted persona that the real Saul would have to spend all of his time promoting and defending. And in the end this caricature, this phony Saul...would cost the real Saul everything.

Unfortunately, there's a little Saul in all of us.

  • If you have an inordinate concern with protecting your reputation...
  • If you become enraged over every perceived slight or sign of disrespect by others...
  • If you feel an overwhelming urge to defend yourself to your critics...
  • If you leave a social function and spend time worrying about the details of what you said or did...
  • If you avoid intimacy and tend to keep people at arms-length...
  • If you habitually medicate with anything (drugs, alcohol, shopping, food, pornography, television, etc.)...
  • If you have an ongoing struggle with anxiety...
  • If you are inordinately concerned about your appearance...
  • If you are inordinately concerned about the appearance of your home or children...
  • If you tear yourself apart when you fail...

...then you have Saul tendencies. Please join us all this month for a brand new series entitled "The King Who Hated Himself." Together, we will explore both the devastating effects of SHAME – and how the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ can set us free from them.
